There are many different grades of commercial dextrin
on the market and all are manufactured for different purposes. I tested
MANY different samples and talked to several engineers to find the
exact product I was looking for. If you frequent the various Pyro
forums, you’ll read many comments regarding the quality of the dextrin
I offer.
The main benefit of commercial Dextrin vs
home-made is consistency. Commercial Dextrin is prepared by acid
hydrolysis and tested to ensure that each batch is exactly the
same. Home made is typically not as “sticky” and
each batch will be different.
You
can make your own form of Dextrin by baking corn starch if you
have an hour or 2 to bake it and another hour to clean out your
wife’s oven. It won’t have the binding abilities of this product but it is one of those things that everyone should try at least once.
Yellow dextrin is commonly used as a water soluble adhesive on envelopes, postage stamps, cardboard tubes and in pyrotechnic formulations.
